Fremont moves to 5A Division after student population drops

By Redd Peterson Journalist

Every two years, the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) Board of Trustees meets and assigns each High School that is a member of the UHSAA to their region for the next two years. Due to the addition of a new high school and boundary changes, Fremont’s population dropped by around 800 students.

Starting in the 2025-26 school year, Fremont will be moving down from 6A Region 1 to 5A Region 5. This drop down is due to Fremont losing many students due to the opening of West Field High School who coincidentally, is moving up from 4A Region 11 to 5A Region 5, the same new region for Fremont.

The Silverwolves will depart from having In-Region rivalry games against Weber in all sports, but most teams are likely to schedule the Warriors during Non-Region play. With that being said, Fremont will renew past In-Region showdowns with Roy, Clearfield, Northridge, Box Elder, and Bonneville. Will West Field be the new in-region rival?

Fremont has been in previous Regions with all schools except West Field since the school only opened the beginning of this school year. . The addition of West Field could be an exciting new rivalry between the Longhorns and the Silverwolves to go with the longstanding rivalry between Roy and Fremont.

According to Mr. Dunyon, assistant principal and Athletics Director assistant, even with the Football team departing from playing games with Davis, Farmington, and Weber in region games, they still have these schools on their schedule. Expect most teams to still add former 6A Region 1 opponents to their Non-Region schedules in the next couple seasons. Dunyon adds,

“I think a lot of coaches like to build strong preseason games first to be tested–to play the best in the area.”

Fremont teams will also likely be adding “tougher” opponents to their preseason schedules to help boost their RPI (Rating Percentage Index) ranking.

The RPI combines a teams winning percentage, their opponents winning percentage, and their opponents’ opponents winning percentage. The better ranking your team gets, usually the better chance you get at making a State Playoff run.

With all these changes, Fremont will drop down a class, renew rivalries, and hopefully see more success with more even competition in the future.
