Boys lacrosse coaches and players give us deeper information about the sport they are passionate about. Their passion and success in lacrosse has built bonds within the team.
Boys lacrosse is a fast-paced game. It’s a sport that requires much skill, coordination, physical contact, advanced motor skills to keep the game going at its fast speed.
Reflecting on the initial challenges of the season, Brad Searle, the coach of boys lacrosse says, “We lost 15+ to the Westfield program. We had a number of seniors stay to finish out the Fremont career.” It shows how important the sport is to those who stayed.”
He adds, “We only have 36 boys in the program. We have 20 on the Varsity team and 16 on JV. We really need 45-50 [athletes] to be a successful program.” This means that they have a decent amount of players that are in either Varsity (highest-level) or JV (second-level). With only 36 players, it has created added challenges for the team each game of the season.
Coach Searle likes to challenge his players to lead and give their input as an athlete. Searle reflects, “I love the speed of the game. It is always moving from one end of the field to the other. It is an intense and physical game and watching the young men go out there and just put it all out on the field is very rewarding. I had the players give me some direction on who they think should be captains and then looked to see who were the guys that could lead us in the good times as well as the bad times.”
Kaydin Berry, number 5 and a senior captain on the team, reflects on his love of the sport and the team. He discusses the lasting impact of being a part of the team this season. Berry says, “We get to go out there and compete, and play together, and just have fun together, enjoy it.” This shows that the bond you build up with your teammates can make playing the game funner so everybody enjoys it more. He says, “Don’t take anything for granted, we always say you can’t turn one side, once you flip that page, you can’t go back. So just make sure that we’re doing everything in 100% and we’re trying our best.”
Number 27, Tyler Widdison, a junior that plays attack and middle, Widdison says “Skills that helped get onto the Fremont lacrosse team are doing many trainings and practicing lacrosse and learning footwork and how to run fast.”
Widdison continues, “Me and my teammate have to follow a certain game plan in order to score and win the game. Our coach sets up plays and we try and run them as best as we can.” Following your coach and trying your best for every training and game will benefit more than most might think.
