Dance Company is wrapping up this season with fun experiences and new opportunities under their belt. They held dance lessons, competed in competitions, and saw enormous amounts of growth as a team.
Marinda Jacob, senior and captain on the team, says “Dance Company this year has been so fun, I’ve made so many memories and so many new friends all while getting to do my favorite thing, dance.”
Ms. Foutz, dance teacher, talks about the teamwork they have demonstrated throughout the course of the year, “They’ve worked really well together and been super supportive of each other, and I’ve seen a lot of growth. They hold each other accountable and give each other feedback which is super beneficial for them, and I’m really proud of how hard they’ve worked.”
The team recently competed in the Starstruck competition in which they won several awards. The routine, “Power Over Me”, choreographed by Bri Painter, last year’s Dance Co captain and Fremont’s dance Sterling Scholar, won second place in its category.
Marinda Jacobs piece, Falling Apart, was their highest scoring piece of the night, earning a high gold and judges choice.
Alexis Carter, co captain, got best choreography, judges choice, and a gold ranking for her hip hop routine.
And finally, they got eighth place in the intermediate level, won judges choice awards for contemporary and hip hop, and earned some high gold awards.
Overall, Starstruck was a fantastic competition where the team was able to showcase the growth they’ve made and the skills they have been working on this season. They also attended the Utah High School Dance Festival which is held in March. This festival was a great experience for Dance Company as it is very educational. Members of the team had the opportunity to receive feedback on their choreography and improve their skills during the master classes they offer.
The team is still building and adding new members for next year. While it is a fun, flexible opportunity to develop dance and choreography skills, it does require dedication. Alexis Carter, co-captain, explains that girls looking to join should know that it’s a commitment and that they’ll need to work hard on improving their skills. She also says that to make the team you should be confident and put your best effort into the dances and practices.
Marinda says, “People looking to join Dance Company should know that it is the best high school experience. Expect to have early morning practice, a schedule that is easy to work with, and to have fun!”
Ms. Foutz encourages any girls that are interested in joining the team to try out and take her dance classes to improve their skills! Foutz adds, “We do accept students from other schools, like our co-captain Alexis who goes to Westfield. So if you go to Westfield or Weber and want to try out for our team, we can try and make it work!”
Tryouts were held on May 7th, but if you missed them and you’d like to join, see Ms. Foutz in the dance room, F125.
