Softball is a challenging sport–impossible to master–no matter how hard you practice. Even for the best players, a 30% batting average is considered amazing. So,the softball girls kept their resilience up as they came up against some of the best teams in the state. Now, compared to the beginning of the season, the girls have greatly improved, including having a multiple-game winning streak.
Despite the hardships at the beginning of the season, the girls as of right now are second in region. With one senior girl on the team, Savannah Palmatier, placing first in stat leaders not just in Fremont’s stats but 6A region stats as well.
Palmatier placed first in the batting average and stolen base states. Several other girls have placed fourth and above in starts for the 6A region as well. The girls have shown impressive growth compared to the beginning of the year.
With a lot of the team being freshman and sophomores this year, it’s important for the graduating seniors to show them how to lead, be a team, and play properly. The team doesn’t have any designated captains, the seniors of the team are considered the captains and leaders. So while they’re helping the freshman and sophomores grow and learn to work with each other, they’re also teaching the juniors how to be leaders for the next year.
One of the seniors on the team, Saige Steele, gives advice for the future players, “The advice I would give to the younger girls starting off is to always give 110%. Some days you might be more tired and not want to work hard, but just give it all you have. Always hustle and help with equipment. Be the first one on and off the field. Also, try to remember why you started playing and why you loved the sport when you were younger. On hard days, remembering these things helps a lot.”
Good luck to softball as they head to Superregionals starting May 15th.
