Cheering From The Inside: The Role Of a High School Mascot

By: Angeline Cowley

Being a high school mascot is more than just dressing up and entertaining crowds. It’s a unique role that comes with several advantages, both personally, socially, and academically.

Mascots are central to building a sense of unity and pride within the school. Whether it’s leading chants or interacting with fans, mascots bring energy to events. But really “It depends on the students in the stands. Their behavior is going to empower the student in the suit” as Mrs. Mitchell said.

While performing in front of large crowds may seem intimidating, wearing the mascot costume allows for freedom of expression without fear of judgment or as our mascot this year has said ”it’s easier sometimes to joke around or sometimes be bold and cheer at games when everyone doesn’t know who I am.” This anonymity can help them step out of their comfort zone and develop greater self-assurance.

The role also encourages creativity. As a mascot, they free to create fun, memorable moments through skits, dances, or spontaneous interactions with the crowd. This fosters not only creativity but also performance skills, such as timing and improvisation. Additionally, being a mascot offers a physical benefit. The high-energy performances keep them active and in shape, making it a fun way to stay fit.

While the social and physical perks of being a high school mascot are clear, the academic side is often overlooked. However, serving as a mascot can significantly contribute to a student’s academic profile in several ways. Being a mascot is a leadership role. They’re representing their school at various events, and this responsibility requires dedication, organization, and accountability. These are qualities that colleges and universities look for in applicants.

“There are thousands of scholarships for the mascot across the country” Mrs. Mitchell, Fremont High School’s Principal said, schools often give full ride to the majority of high school mascots such as the University of Texas at Austin.

As Mrs. Mitchell has mentioned mascots often work with other groups, such as the cheerleaders, the hype squad, and the student body.

The role of a high school mascot is not only a fun and fulfilling way to contribute to school spirit but also a significant boost to personal, social, and academic development. From building confidence to enhancing leadership and problem-solving skills, being a mascot is a holistic experience that can prepare students for success in both.
