The Fremont football team came into the season this year with changes all around. New coach Tuatagaloa, new quarterback Manase Tuatagaloa, and new philosophy to be closer as a team. These changes seem to be working into some positive outcomes.
The team’s goal to win a region championship fueled an offseason of changes as well. Senior WR/Corner John Suka said, “At the beginning of the year it was definitely iffy because we didn’t have our team, but we came together fully with Davis. I feel like we played together pretty good, we actually won and they were a top team in region!”
The year started with losses to Mountain Ridge and Roy, both quality teams. Coach Tuatagaloa was quoted by the Standard Examiner following Fremont’s big win over Weber, “We’re not surprised where we are at. When we lost to Roy my exact words were, ‘Five weeks from now, we’ll be a different team’.“
Indeed, that is exactly how things played out as the Silverwolves found their stride and their full roster ripped off 7 wins in a row at the time of this writing. The win streak started with a 47-13 win over Bonneville, followed up with a prolific 61-13 homecoming win over Hunter.
The offense continued to click with another big 48-13 win over Cyprus, before leaning on the defense the next week with a close 15-7 win over Layton.
Brant Koford, a senior MLB says. “It feels like when we all play together we’re brothers.”
A huge showdown with Davis loomed, on September 27th with Fremont at a 5-2 record at this point and Davis in the driver seat for the Region at 5-1. In another epic game, the Wolves won 19-10.
A 28-18 win over ranked Syracuse brought the win streak to 6 games and the only major hurdle left for the region championship was the game, with the Weber Warriors with a similar win to loss record to fremont. The Silverwolfs came together as a team and dominated its way to a 35-21 win.
The preseason goal of winning the Region 1 Championship became a reality, even though the title was shared with Farmington after a 21-14 loss in the last game of the season.
In a year that started with change, the Silverwolves alchemized early season losses into lessons on their way to an 8 game winning streak and the Region 1 title. We’ll see if the Wolves have it in them to get back to Fremont’s tradition of deep playoff runs. Fremont earned the 6th seed in the state playoffs and opens with Syracuse in the second round after both teams earned byes through the first round of games. The Paw Print will be there for the home playoff game on 11/1 at 2pm. Make sure you’re there – it’s going to be an epic rematch with a Region 1 foe.
