Within the midst of our crazy school we have very talented actors and actresses.
Catch Me If You Can was Fremont’s latest musical bringing out some people’s hidden talents. This may be just a school play but its story is based on the life of a man named Frank William Abagnale Jr. Abagnale wrote a book based on his life called “Catch Me If You Can”. This then sparked a movie and now our amazing school play.
First off the play was very well put together and had some amazing acting and very well done sets. The crew got very creative with revolving walls that switched back and forth from scene to scene. Additionally, the lights set the mood as viewers watched the play with friends and family.
The production itself started off with a boy named Frank William Jr, played and acted by Sam Osler grade 11. Frank Jr. is a character full of mischief that finds himself in trouble with everything starting when he pretends to be a substitute teacher.
After running off to New York City, Frank quickly takes serious risks like forging signatures, altering his driver’s license to be older, and even stealing two million dollars from the government.
With all of this trouble, the FBI becomes suspicious of the money missing from government funds, and begins searching for Frank’s location. However, because of Frank’s tendency to travel at random, pinpointing his location becomes a serious task.
After tracking down some information about their suspect, Hanratty, the lead investigator and his group of detectives gather information about Frank through comic books, stale pizza boxes, and a half written letter.
However, as Frank is quick on his feet, he continually fools those on his trail, and lives a life full of exciting adventures. With little to no qualifications, Frank constantly manages to secure short lived careers in fields like piloting, nursing, and he even convinces a group that he is a lawyer.
With a troubling past behind him, Frank continues his journey with quick turns, and begins to put his effort into a young nurse, Brenda, who becomes his love interest. After years of twists and turns, Frank’s actions start catching up to him just as he is ready to put his behaviors behind him.
Brenda Strong, Frank’s love interest, was played by Emma Roseland, a Senior. Roseland has a long history of acting in plays, both in and out of school. For example, three years ago she acted in Fremont’s Seussical the Musical. Aside from that, Emma has been singing since she was eight, and was excited to play Brenda in her senior show.
Troy Wilson, who portrayed Frank Senior in the play, was a little nervous about playing Frank’s father. As a sophomore, getting such a significant role came as a surprise to Wilson.. When asked about what he thought he struggled with as a lead in the show, he said “Acting skills, I seemed to struggle with that.”
Taking the spotlight for most of the show, Sam Ostler, a Junior, played Frank. Ostler was excited to get the part he got, but wasn’t expecting much when he auditioned. However, by shooting high, he hit higher than what he was expecting.
Through all the rehearsals, practices, and shows, Ostler says there was some strain on his voice. When asked about what he would do differently in the play he said, “I would take care of my voice better so I would have the perfect voice (in every show).” One can only imagine the little amount of voice he had left to spare.
Jarem Eastman is a junior playing Carl Hanratty, the head detective. When asked how long Eastman has been singing and acting he said “I have been singing since I was a child, but I have been acting since 7th grade” Despite his experience, Eastman was very nervous as this was his first lead role in a play and was shocked to get the role he played.
Overall the play was so amazing and worth the wait. They put so much hard work into this play, staying after school and at home, and they did such a good job keeping it entertaining and making it appropriate for the family. I highly recommend you see the next play. It is worth your time, and it’s so much fun.
