Martha Graham, an American Modern Dancer states, “Dance is the hidden language of the soul.”Fremont Dance Company focuses on expressive dance interpretation while drawing inspiration from artists like Martha Graham.
Ms. Foutz, the coach of Dance Company this year reflects, “Dance Company is a little bit less of a time commitment, it’s also less expensive.” Being on the team
Dance Company does various styles of dance like contemporary, jazz, and hip hop. Every year starting in January, almost every teammate gets the opportunity to choreograph their own pieces and put them into the dance company’s end of year show. Often they will also take those pieces to their yearly competition.
Fremont’s Dance Company does lots of different shows. Starting in November they perform in a showcase known as Northern Utah High School Dance (NUHD). NUHD is an event where other high schools dance companies come together to put on a showcase for lots of different elementary schools. This showcase follows a children’s book and each high school is required to dance to one of the pages.
In December, the Company also does the Subi Fundraiser. The Subi Fundraiser is a fundraiser held for kids in Uganda during christmas. The Dance Company performs one of their dances to raise money for the fundraiser. On top of that, Dance Company will also perform in halftimes for basketball games and in assemblies for Fremont.
Marinda Jacob, a Senior at Fremont and President of Dance Company this year claims, “We are going to do an end of year party and birthday parties for everyone. We also plan on doing a lot of team bonding stuff before competition.” This is like gift exchanges and team hang outs before and after competitions.
The team council includes: Marinda Jacob as Captain, Alexis Carter as Co-Captain and Nicole Hayes as the Social Media Manager. Dance Company does have a social media account on Instagram, you can follow them, @fhsdanceco.
Marinda Jacobs states, “We don’t do any after school practices unless we need an extra rehearsal.” The Dance Company also has rehearsals from 6:40 am to the end of first period every A-day. Joining the team also gets you either a P.E. credit or a Fine Arts credit and as a student you are allowed to choose either.
Being a part of a dance company is more than just the dance or school credit, Ms. Foutz states, “Dance Company is a way to gain friendship, be involved in the school, fill your resume, learn social skills, and build confidence.”
The team also puts together a float for the Homecoming parade and gets involved with multiple school events throughout the year. They will often put together a cute K4K basket every year for our holiday fundraiser. Then as a team they also do their own fundraiser at the beginning of the year and it’s typically decided by the council in what they plan on doing to raise money. This year the team did a costume sell and a gear sell at our holiday market, and at the beginning of the year.
Ms. Foutz would also like to share some advice to give to oncoming dancers interested in Dance Company this following year, “Don’t get stuck on your technique when coming to an audition, just show me your passion because that’s what really matters, your passion for dance.”
Clinics will be held on May 6th at 3:00 pm in the dance room and Auditions will be on May 7th also at 3:00 pm in the dance room. Come prepared with your passion for dance and an opportunity to meet other dancers.
