How Modern Teens Stay Fashionable

When you walk through the halls at Fremont High School today, you’re guaranteed to see students on their phones, listening to some tunes with their airpods, and most definitely you will see some Adidas Sambas. But what keeps students engaged in style and trends?

But jump back to 10, 20, even 50 years ago,  most high school trends were much, much different than they are today. But others still have stood the test of time. With the growth of social media and apps like Depop, fashion fads are evolving the quickest they ever have.

Some of the trends that are “in” today are huge water bottles, animal prints on anything and everything, and clothes that are two sizes too big.

But, not all current trends are original. The Y2K and 90’s styles are still alive and well among students today.

Tayah Olsen, a Junior at Fremont and certified fashionista, believes these throwback styles are still being rocked by teens today because of the vibe they bring to an outfit.

“I think because [these trends] are classic. They make people look good and feel good.”

Oversized jeans and jorts and frosted tips were extremely popular in the 2000’s and are still adorned today. Highschoolers take trends of the past and give them a twist from the 2020’s.

With the utilization of apps like TikTok and Instagram, a look at other peoples’ styles, including those from past and present, is more accessible. With just one scroll, an Instagram user can take inspiration from other users and build off of it to create a style unique to them.

Instead of getting fashion inspiration from television or magazines like past generations, teens today see millions of social media accounts dedicated solely to fashion.

On apps like Depop, millions of users buy and sell vintage clothing. When someone sees a trend they like on Instagram, they can go straight to Depop and search for clothing that fits a desired trend and upgrade their wardrobe almost instantly.

Devin Bodin, a Junior at Fremont and religious user of Depop, says Depop is very easy to use because of its simplicity. “It’s really easy to find clothes and you can search up for whatever you want, whatever your style is and it’s pretty cheap.”

With Depop and social media, teens’ styles and trends in fashion today are evolving quicker than ever. Teens’ fashion sense now combines past trends with newer trends creating a fusion of fashion that will inspire generations to come. It’s only a matter of time before we see those Bell Bottoms make a return, wouldn’t you say?
