More Than Medals: The Swim Team Builds Bonds and Strengthens Relationships

The Fremont Swim team may be smaller than years past, but that doesn’t stop friendships from forming and improvement throughout the entire team.

The swim team’s size decreased significantly from last season, going from 42 swimmers last year to just 26 swimmers on this year’s team. The decrease of swimmers is due to many factors such as boundary changes and many seniors on the team from last season graduating. Still, Head Coach of the swim team Timothy Shupe, believes there are still positives that come from a smaller team.

Coach Shupe said, “You can get more one-on-one attention with the swimmers and with that they are able to improve a little bit quicker than if we had a larger team.”

With senior leaders such as Madi Wuthrich, Jordyn Wood, Hannah Cook, Sarah Davies, Miranda Parker, and Isaac Chapple, the less experienced swimmers can look toward them for guidance.

Coach Shupe stated, “The Seniors are definitely leading by example and I think their experience is helping to level out those that are new and just help guide them.”

With more one-on-one attention with their coaches and help from seasoned seniors, the many younger swimmers on the team will develop and hopefully dominate future meets. The team this year is filled with many sophomores who can only improve and grow into better swimmers in the future as they practice and compete.

Swimmers on the team have been able to connect much easier than in past years because they are a very tight group and the support for each other is immense. The bonds created between teammates will only help the team inside the pool and out of it as they will continue to get better together as a team.

Allie Gaz, a junior on the swim team said, “You make a lot of good friends there and you get to meet a lot of people, and it’s a good way to get yourself involved in school.”

The Fremont swim team has definitely faced their fair share of challenges so far this season, but these challenges will hopefully turn fruitful, helping the team grow and improve as a team throughout the lengthy swim season.
