On October 10th, the Fremont High School Orchestra changed things up. The Phantom of the Opera walked into the school with a giant banana. Jedi knights hauled in huge cases with the cellos (no doubt using the Force to help). Inside, there were ghouls setting up for their Halloween Concert.
Brady Griffiths, a junior, was killing some time in the parking lot before the concert and witnessed some students in hazmat suits walk into the school. “I was like what’s going on! I didn’t know they were dressing up, so I was like really lost. There was so many it was just flowing!”
Their costumes weren’t the only thing on point; their music was too. Some crowd favorites were: Creatures by Brian Balmages, Play That Swing by Katie O’Hara Labrie and Fremont’s traditional finale fiddle piece.
The fiddle piece had the Orchestra surround the crowd instead of playing on the stage, causing the music to echo in the Auditorium. The effect was immersive and memorable. With the orchestra teacher, Ms. Taylor conducting the students through the rows of seats, the students didn’t miss a note.
Felicity Findley, a junior in the audience, thought it was a really fun and outgoing piece to end on. “It was fascinating to see how well they concentrate on playing, I will definitely go to another one next year.”
Orchestra concerts might not have the hooting and hollering of some of the other sporting events, but they can be just as entertaining and the talent and skill on display is definitely worth your time.
With a troupe of talented musicians each playing their part beautifully, the cellos, basses, and violins create music that takes you on a journey.
