The Debate of Holiday Decorating

There’s no doubt that one of the best parts of the year is the holiday season and celebrating these special days can look different for everyone. Whether it be starting to write letters for Santa right after Halloween, or waiting until December 1st to put up the Christmas tree there are many ways people like to recognize the joyful season.

In a survey done by You.Gov about the holidays, they found “Almost one-half of holiday decorators get started between Thanksgiving and the end of November. Around one in six (16%) will wait until early December, but only 5% get started on decorating in mid-December or later.”

A Fremont sophomore, Isabella Paige, decorates after Thanksgiving, she says “Because then you don’t have to worry about the turkey getting in the way.”

Starting to get ready for the holidays after Thanksgiving is very common, but it’s not the case for everyone.

With all of the Christmas spirit, Thanksgiving can sometimes be left in the shadows. The turkey day’s proximity to Christmas has definitely affected how it can easily be overlooked.

Kash Barker, a sophomore, says, “I celebrate Thanksgiving just as much as Christmas. I think it’s important to be thankful for what you have.”

Jenna Bone, a junior at Fremont, waits until mid December to start the holiday decorating, she says “Christmas is fun I guess, but it’s just another holiday.” Not everyone finds putting up the ornaments early something they have interest in doing, but what about movies and music?

Like many others, Jenna also expressed that she hates Christmas music but loves the movies and will watch them all year long.

Some people prefer to take their time until they think it’s right to celebrate but others can’t wait to see the star on top of their tree. Decorating earlier in the season can bring people holiday cheer and a joyful space in their homes while also feeling that nostalgia of the holidays but is it ever too early to decorate?

Before the spooky season has ended the colorful lit up tree already goes up in some homes. Talan Cottle, a sophomore says “…but I decorate my room. I put up my Christmas tree before Halloween.”

Garret Steed, a Fremont sophomore and holiday movie lover says, “Personally I decorate on July 1st because I’m a hallmark kind of guy and Christmas in July is my life.” The excitement of Christmas can carry on all the way to summer, bingeing the iconic movies and never giving Santa Claus a break.

Celebrating and embracing the holiday season can look different for everybody. Even though everyone has different opinions and values, we can all strive to be grateful, to give gratitude and kindness to not only others but yourself and to remember what the holiday season really means to you.
