The Tortured Poets Department

Taylor Swift continues to conquer musical records with each album she produces.

April 19th, 2024 was a very exciting day for all of the swifties! On this dayTaylor Swift released her 11th album, The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD.) She announced the album at this year’s last grammy’s in her acceptance speech of her 13th grammy.

This announcement threw her fans for a loop because of the expectations of a completely different album. Swifties were all anticipating the release of Reputation (Taylor’s Version), because of all of her rerecordings that have been produced the past two years. Reputation (Taylor’s Version) was next in line, though Taylor had other plans in mind with a brand new album with a special feature.

Swifties were working hard to try and decipher Taylor Swift’s “easter eggs” knowing that there was something special about this upcoming album. Taylor left little hints in all of her socials, all relating to the number 2. Fans thought she would drop another rerecording as mentioned, Reputation, but that was not the case.

Two hours after the initial drop of TTPD, Taylor dropped the surprise of a duel album. There are now two parts of the album, now including the addition of The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. The Anthology is an addition of 15 more songs on top of the original album, meaning 31 new songs total.

“I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you.” Taylor commented with the release of The Anthology.

Taylor at the Eras Tour

Two years ago Taylor dropped her album Midnights which broke records left and right. (link to previous taylor article). Just as critics suspected, TTPD has already breached top 10 on the billboard charts and is overcoming her previous stats.

It took only 5 days for this album to become the most streamed in a single week on Spotify, passing 1 billion streams. It proceeded to break a Spotify record once more becoming the most streamed album in a single day, passing the old record of, still Taylor’s album, Midnights. Spotify declared her the most streamed artist in a single day since her release of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in October 2023. Fortnight (ft. Post Malone) the lead single from her new album was also the most streamed song in a single day for the streaming service in history. This song alone had over 39 million streams.

In only 3 days TTPD became the most sold vinyl in a week with 700,000 copies purchased. Billboard reported Taylor broke her own sales records with this double album. TTPD sold 1.4 million copies on the day of its release, resulting in the week of it’s release becoming her biggest and most successful of any of Taylor’s albums.

Taylor Swift is arguably the number one pop star of today’s age. With the Eras Tour, rerecordings of old albums, brand new double albums, and her movie The Eras Tour on Disney+, she has obtained an extremely high position in the musician, and media industry the past two years. Keep going Taylor, all the Swifties are excited to see what you come up with next!
