Sprints, long distance, shot put, discus, hurdles, relays, these are the exciting events the track team works hard every year to compete in.
But this year, the outlook for our track team has been unknown. The split of Fremont due to the new boundaries caused the track team to lose numbers, meaning less athletes per event, with some events having none at all–specifically the pole vaulting event.
Coach Nate Hill, boys track coach, says, “We lost a lot of our [athletes] to that. It has been a challenge to fill those gaps.” Nevertheless, the team remains strongly grounded. Their small numbers have made them a tight knit group working closely together to push each other to their full potential.
Brecklyn Bugnet, a senior, says, “This year my team has really stepped up, we’ve become as tight as sisters! Everyone is ready to put in work to see results. We’re all so supportive of each other and we never forget to have fun.” Bugnet recently celebrated being signed to the Weber State Track team.
In track, athletes qualify individually for state. When asked if the team would qualify, athletes and coaches agreed there would be many individuals competing, but the whole team would not be making it to state.
Field events, such as javelin, discus, and shotput, are also hard at work trying to make it to the end of the season with positive records, but most of all their attitude.
The future of Fremont’s track team remains hopeful. Each athlete is working on progressing in their respective skills. Taylee Richards, a senior, says, “I’m trying to improve obviously, like getting some personal records and just staying in shape and having a good time.”
Bugnet further reflects, “I know that next year is going to be tough. Our school split and half of the girls varsity team is graduating this year. [But] I also know that if they truly commit to the sport then they’re going to flourish individually!”
